Synthetic Oil – What Is All the Fuss About?

Synthetic oils are everywhere. You’ve seen the infomercials, you’ve read the magazine articles, you’ve seen them in the store. Ted down the road has a sports car, and he’s raving about how much better synthetic oils are, but your neighbor, Bob, says they’re nothing but a fad and a waste of money. It can be hard to know what to make of all this.

In this article, Amsoil Dealer – 109 Autosolutions would like to share with you the science behind these products, and allow you to make an informed decision about what’s best for your motoring needs.

Motor oils are designed to three main functions:

· Lubrication
· Cooling, and
· Protection Against Wear

The differences in physical properties and characteristics of traditional oils and synthetic oils affect how well they can perform each of these functions.

Viscosity

Non-synthetic oils are distilled from crude oil and then refined. This is not a perfect process, and results in oils that contain other compounds, other crude oil products, and have a varied molecular structure including long chains of hydrocarbons. As temperatures become lower, these long hydrocarbons tend to adhere to each other, making the liquid thicker and less runny – more ‘viscous’. Special compounds are added to increase traditional oils’ viscosity, but these break down at higher temperatures, reducing the oil’s lifecycle.

Synthetic oils are developed in laboratories and are designed specifically to have shorter hydrocarbon chains, meaning that they do not become viscous until reaching much lower temperatures. Practically, this means that synthetic oils remain liquids and can effectively lubricate your engine even at lower temperatures. They also work well up to much higher temperatures and are less likely to degrade.

Protection Against Corrosion

Engine oils protect against corrosion by using their ‘base’ molecules to ‘mop up’ and neutralize acidic molecules produced by the combustion process. The oil becomes less effective at this as it becomes more saturated by acid molecules until it ceases to function.

Natural oils contain variable amounts of basic molecules, whereas synthetic oils are specifically developed to contain higher amounts. This means that they last longer and do not need to be changed as frequently. This is a great benefit if you feel like you are changing your oil too often.

Deposits

The impurities found in natural oils can leave deposits in your engine, increasing friction and unnecessary heat and leading to an increase in engine wear. Synthetic oils do not have this issue as they are developed to be free from impurities.
